2022 First-Time RV Buyers: Younger, Diverse, and Work-Focused Demographics

The RV industry has witnessed a significant shift in the demographics and motivations of first-time RV buyers in 2022.

According to a recent survey commissioned by the RV Industry Association (RVIA), younger and more diverse buyers are increasingly embracing the RV lifestyle, with the primary reason for purchasing an RV being the need for a place to stay while working.

This new trend highlights the growing appeal of the RV lifestyle among those who value the flexibility and convenience of having a mobile workspace, as per the News & Insights report of the RVIA.

As remote work becomes more prevalent, RVs are seen as a practical solution for professionals seeking to balance their work and travel aspirations.

In addition to using RVs for work purposes, first-time buyers cited the love of road trips, the desire to use RVs as a base camp for outdoor recreation, and the comfort of traveling in an RV as key motivations for their purchase.

The survey also revealed that the ease and affordability of RV travel were important factors, with 32% of buyers pointing to the avoidance of common travel hassles and 30% highlighting the ability to save money on travel costs as major motivations.

Despite the global oil prices hovering near $70 a barrel amid recession fears, the RV industry has continued to attract new buyers who see the value in the flexibility and affordability of the RV lifestyle.

With changing demographics and motivations, it is clear that the appeal of RV travel extends beyond traditional road trips and vacations, becoming an increasingly popular choice for modern professionals seeking a mobile work-life balance.

RVIA’s survey was conducted among 600 first-time RV buyers who purchased their RVs in 2022. It was completed online, with respondents representing a cross-section of the U.S. population along key demographics, including age, gender, income, and ethnicity.
