Motorhome & Campervan Trips Boom – But Expert Warns Campers Before Setting Off

Drivers are warned to ensure their vehicles pass the inspection, with more than 29 million expected staycations before the end of the year. New research from Admiral Insurance has found that more than half of motorists fail to carry out essential checks to their campervan or motorhome before every trip.

This means that 55 percent of motorists don’t check the condition of their tires, and 54 percent don’t test the oil.

Another 52 percent did not check the water and screenwash levels and 51 percent didn’t check the tire pressure.

Motorhomes and campervans provide a kitchen, toilet, and sleeping area as well as a place to park overnight. It is crucial that drivers perform further checks to ensure these extra parts are working correctly.

According to the research, nearly one-fifth of respondents wouldn’t check for damp or leakage in their campervans or motorhomes, and only eight percent would test to make sure that the appliances are working properly.

Admiral’s Head of Motor Product, Clare Egan said that motorists may seem confident about their ability to drive a campervan or motorhome, but accidents can happen because it is very different from driving a car.

Egan urged campers to practice on quiet roads before setting off on their first road trip.

“To ensure a stress-free trip, make sure you do regular maintenance checks on your vehicle. Also, double-check that you have all your necessities before you set out,” she said.

According to the insurer, 30% of respondents believed it was okay to park in a public parking lot or lay-by.

However, public parking lots are managed by local authorities so this could be considered a violation of Traffic Regulation Orders which could lead to a fine.

The only legal places to camp are those on official campsites. However, private property is allowed with permission.

Admiral suggests that drivers check several things before embarking on a journey. This is especially important if you haven’t been on the road for a while.

It’s a good idea if the van has a roof to lift it once or twice while watching from outside to ensure it doesn’t open halfway through the journey.

Safety equipment such as the fire blanket and fire extinguisher should also be checked by drivers.

A fire can be started by poor wiring. It’s worth having your electrics checked out by a professional.

This is especially true for campervans with additional features such as stereos, TVs, refrigerators, and electric cookers.

It was also suggested to look out for rust on the campervan/motorhome. This is more common in older vehicles. It is usually found underneath the doors, under the headlights, and around the wheel arches.

Eight percent of Brits didn’t believe specialist insurance was necessary when asked if motorhomes or campervans require it, the research said.

Another 35 percent admitted they didn’t know. This could mean they are driving around unprotected.

Before drivers leave for the road, they need to have the correct insurance in place. This will ensure that their vehicle and personal property are protected.

Travel insurance is also required for motorcyclists, particularly if they’re driving in Europe or going abroad.
