Gateway RV Park Closes After Cold Lake Council Deliberation

The City of Cold Lake council in Alberta recently deliberated on a proposal concerning the future of the Gateway RV Park, situated at the Information Centre. This discussion approved the decision to close the park, according to a Lakeland Today news report.

Alberta, a province renowned for its breathtaking landscapes and diverse natural beauty, offers outdoor activities that cater to adventurers of all types. Visitors can immerse themselves in activities such as hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding on the extensive network of trails that wind through the picturesque terrain.

The council’s decision to close the Gateway RV Park will be revisited in future Corporate Priorities Committee meetings. The Corporate Priorities Committee presented the recommendation to suspend the park’s operations and urged the administration to seek alternative locations for its future.

During a council meeting on February 27, Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) Kevin Nagoya presented an overview of the park’s finances and the financial challenges it has faced. He shared the committee’s recommendation to suspend the park’s operations and explore future options for a new RV park location.

“I don’t think it—in terms of the air show—would make any difference in that regard. There are a lot of campgrounds within the region that are a lot nicer than there. We’re only really seeing one or two users that are utilizing that location in the summer,” Coun. Chris Vining said, inquiring about the possibility of delaying the closure.

Other sites within Cold Lake, such as Imperial Park, have been more popular for various summer events

“There is a lot of asks for other locations within the city, including Imperial Park, because you do have a lot of tournaments in the summer, including baseball, softball, and a lot of times on parking, and lacrosse tournaments and stuff like that, they’re utilizing the Energy Centre parking lot under the approval of the bylaw,” Nagoya said.

In winter months, Alberta transforms into a snowy wonderland, presenting a new realm of outdoor activities. The province’s parks become hotspots for snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, and ice fishing, allowing enthusiasts to enjoy the crisp air and stunning snowy landscapes. Additionally, the region’s lakes and rivers provide excellent opportunities for canoeing, kayaking, and fishing, offering serene environments to connect with nature.
