NSW’s Booming Caravan and Camping Industry: A Win for Local Communities and Tourism

The popularity of caravan and camping experiences in New South Wales (NSW) continues to surge, with the National Visitor Survey results for the year ending March 2023 recording the highest number of visitor trips in any March quarter in the state’s history.

A staggering 4.81 million trips were taken in NSW, generating 18.1 million visitor nights. This represents a significant increase of 35% in trips and 37% in nights compared to the year-end March 2022, according to a LinkedIn post by the Caravan & Camping Industry Association NSW.

The 55+ and 20–29-year age segments saw the greatest growth in trips year-on-year, up 42% and 40.6% respectively. While the 55+ market represents the biggest market by nights (45%), the 30-54 years age group takes the most trips (42%). All up, caravan and camping visitors spent more than $3.3 billion across NSW.

These figures reveal just how much Australians love caravan and camping holidays, as well as the commitment the industry has made to attracting, innovating, and delivering on the expectations of their guests.

The surge in popularity of caravan and camping experiences in NSW is not only a testament to the state’s natural beauty and diverse landscapes but also to the quality and variety of its camping facilities.

The increase in caravan and camping trips has significant implications for local communities, the economy, and tourism in NSW. The influx of visitors brings in revenue for local businesses, from campgrounds and caravan parks to restaurants, shops, and tourist attractions.

The $3.3 billion spent by caravan and camping visitors across NSW is a significant contribution to the state’s economy.

Moreover, the popularity of caravan and camping experiences can help to promote sustainable tourism in NSW. These types of holidays often have a lower environmental impact than other forms of travel, as they encourage visitors to spend time in nature and leave no trace.

This aligns with the growing trend towards eco-friendly travel and can help to preserve NSW’s natural landscapes for future generations.

The continued growth in popularity of caravan and camping experiences in NSW is a positive trend for the state. It brings in revenue for local communities and the economy, promotes sustainable tourism, and reflects the quality of NSW’s camping facilities and natural landscapes.

As the Caravan & Camping Industry Association NSW stated, these are terrific figures that reveal just how much Australians love caravan and camping holidays.
