A newly released survey from the RV Industry Association (RVIA) indicates that over 34 million Americans plan to travel by recreational vehicle this spring, marking a 23% increase from last year.
The rise comes as travelers seek flexibility, affordability, and outdoor experiences amid major events including America’s 250th anniversary, the World Cup, and Route 66’s Centennial.
The Spring Travel Intention Survey found that national parks and coastal destinations are the most popular spring RV stops, with more than half of travelers planning visits to these locations. Private campgrounds and RV resorts are also highly favored for accommodations.
“RV travel allows people to create their own schedule, choose their favorite destinations, and share unforgettable experiences just beyond their door,” Monika Geraci, spokesperson for RVIA, said in a News and Insights report of RVIA on March 12.
“We’re thrilled that more than 34 million Americans plan to take an RV trip this spring,” Geraci added.
Pet-friendly travel is influencing both trip planning and RV purchases, with 51% of leisure travelers indicating they will bring pets along. Survey results show that the ability to travel with pets is a key factor in consumers’ decision to buy an RV.
Outdoor recreation drives many spring trips, with hiking, backpacking, and biking topping the list of activities.
Travelers are increasingly choosing spring RV travel for favorable weather, smaller crowds, and the flexibility to avoid peak Spring Break weeks, highlighting the appeal of shoulder-season travel.
Affordability and nostalgia remain central to RVing’s appeal. Survey respondents cited the enjoyment of road trips, comfortable travel, and opportunities to explore the outdoors as major motivations.
Interest in longer drives is also rebounding, with more travelers planning trips four to 15 hours from home, indicating growing demand for regional and multi-destination itineraries.
Generational trends show varying engagement levels across the RV market. Gen Z travelers are most likely to rent an RV and take extended trips, while Millennials are most likely to purchase RVs and travel with children.
Gen X travelers prioritize pet-friendly travel and show strong purchase intent, and Boomers prefer travel trailers and plan RV purchases on a seven- to 12-month timeline.
The survey also found that 74 million Americans plan to RV at some point over the next year, suggesting sustained interest beyond the spring season.
The Spring Travel Intention Survey was commissioned by the RVIA and conducted by Cairn Consulting.
A total of 1,626 surveys were completed in February, targeting a statistically balanced cross-section of U.S. leisure travelers.
The results carry a margin of error of plus or minus 2.74 percentage points. Leisure travelers were defined as U.S. residents who have taken any leisure trip in the past 12 months.
