Commercial Recreation Specialists (CRS) has introduced FLX Shade, a new shade system designed to install on existing surfaces without excavation, aiming to make shade more accessible and cost-effective for outdoor facilities.
The product addresses a growing demand for shaded areas in public spaces, driven by public health recommendations to limit sun exposure and encourage longer outdoor participation. Traditional shade structures often require significant construction work, creating cost and downtime barriers for site operators.
According to a press release, FLX Shade uses patented FLX Rod technology to transfer wind and weight loads through flexible rods rather than deep concrete footings. This design enables installation on surfaces such as grass, concrete, turf, and asphalt without digging or disrupting existing infrastructure.

“Many sites have long recognized the importance of providing shade but have been held back by the logistical realities of foundation work and extended closures,” Ron Romens, president of CRS, said. “The FLX Rod system was developed to address these specific hurdles.”
The system is designed for use in various outdoor settings, including playgrounds, splashpads, pool decks, park seating areas, athletic fields and bleachers, pickleball and tennis courts, and outdoor cafés.
FLX Shade is available in multiple sizes, shapes, and fabric color options to meet the needs of different environments.

“Every site is different, but almost all of our clients share the same concerns: how fast can we install, how much will it disrupt what we already have, and will it make the space safer and more comfortable for our communities,” said Ryan Hartberg, vice president of sales and marketing at CRS.
“With FLX Shade, we can finally say yes to all three—bringing effective shade to places that have never had access before,” Hartberg added.
