Summer and RVing go together like marshmallows and campfires. Just like any form of travel, however, RVers have to take precautions to stay safe. One of the risks that they need to be aware of is an RV fire. In this video, Liz Amazing tackles some fire prevention tips to keep vacationers enjoying and worry-free.
Having your camper catch fire is every RVer’s worst nightmare, said full-time RVers, Liz and Paul. To help recreational vehicle owners prevent flames from breaking out and burning one’s RV to the ground, the couple talked to Bob Mahlbacher, a former fire chief, to share some safety tips.
The number one thing to consider, per Mahlbacher, is to prioritize one’s self over their possessions if a fire breaks out.
“If you can get away and get out of the RV, that is the most important thing: to save your life first. The equipment, the rig, [and] everything else can be replaced,” he said.
Setting up alert systems can also prevent RV fires. From carbon monoxide detectors to smoke alarms, it’s always good to set up additional alert systems such as smoke alarms in storage bays and another carbon monoxide detector in the living area or the sleeping area.
“Carbon monoxide and propane are heavier than air, so they’re gonna gather around the floor […] first. So you want those detectors no higher than your sleeping area. Smoke is actually lighter than air; that’s why you find them (smoke detectors) on your ceiling,” the former fire chief said.
He also discussed knowing one’s risk, following the manufacturers’ instructions on maintaining appliances, paying attention to recall notices, and more.
