Back in May, a photo sent by their neighbors at a campground came as a big shock to Keep Your Daydream. An extreme weather event happened just a few hours after they left, causing RVs to overturn. In this video, the couple interviews an expert on how to navigate such event.
The couple’s neighbors, Richard and Melinda, were stuck inside their recreational vehicle after a column of rotating, cloud-filled wind (commonly known as a waterspout), came and turned their RV over.
“I looked over to see what the sound was coming from and all I can see was like, a tornado, basically in my face and then ice particles were like sand blasts in my window and that’s when I turned to Richard to go ‘something is terribly wrong!'” Melinda recounts.
Fortunately, a fellow camper saw what happened and was quick to respond, climbing into the toppled trailer to check if Melinda and Richard were okay. The couple then asked the camper to turn off the propane, preventing a potential fire from breaking out. Local authorities came after to respond.
During the interview, Dr. David Titley, the founder of RVWeather.com, shared his weather expertise and discussed ways on how to navigate severe weather and what tools to use for a safer travel.
Dr. David served as a navigator, meteorologist, and oceanographer on five ships and afloat staffs, and ultimately as oceanographer and navigator of the Navy. He is the founder of RV Weather, a website dedicated to helping RVers travel with confidence and stay “weather-wise.”
Severe weather events such as hail, tornadoes, extreme thunderstorms, and more can pop out any time, David said. One of the advises he gave was for RVers to ask campgrounds where to go in case of a severe weather event, not as it is happening, but as soon as they check in.
