Younger, More Diverse RV Owners Redefine Industry Trends

A new demographic study by Go RVing reveals significant changes in RV ownership, with younger and more diverse owners leading the charge.

Conducted by IPSOS, the 2025 RV Owner Demographic Profile outlines shifting consumer trends shaping the future of the RV industry.

The median age of RV owners has dropped from 53 in 2021 to 49, as younger families and first-time owners join the community.

Nearly half of all RV owners now fall between the ages of 35 and 54, a trend indicative of growing interest among working professionals and families with children under 18.

Diversity in ownership is also on the rise. Hispanic-American, African-American, Asian-American, and LGBTQ+ owners now comprise 30% of RV owners.

RVers are also spending more time on the road than ever before. The average annual usage has climbed to 30 days per year, representing a 50% increase since 2021.

Key motivations for RV ownership include spending time in nature (54%), relaxing (52%), and visiting scenic destinations (49%). The desire to travel with pets also influences purchasing decisions, with 49% of owners citing it as an important factor.

The shift toward remote work is further driving interest in RV ownership. Approximately 22% of RV owners report that someone in their household works remotely, with 54% of these individuals having worked from an RV.

The report also highlights a strong “intender” market, with nearly 17 million U.S. households expressing high interest in purchasing an RV.

“This report shows that there is no stereotypical RV owner,” Karen Redfern, chief marketing officer at Go RVing, said in a News and Insights report of RVIA.

“RVers span many demographics with a common thread of valuing quality time outdoors with loved ones,” Redfern emphasized. He stated that the industry is well-positioned to leverage trends in outdoor recreation, remote work, and experiential travel.

Redfern also pointed to opportunities for the RV industry to innovate and enhance customer experiences to maintain growth momentum. “By embracing innovation, targeting new audiences, and providing exceptional customer experiences, the RV industry can drive sustained growth and solidify its place as a key part of the American lifestyle,” she said.
