Cass Scenic Railroad State Park in West Virginia is set to introduce its first-ever campground. Governor Justice announced the development of 100 new campsites, featuring modern facilities to enhance visitors’ experiences.
The project comes with a total investment of over $8 million. Construction began in August 2023, with completion expected by July 2025.
The campground will be located on the former Deer Creek Extract Plant site./ This site played a role in producing hemlock and spruce bark extracts during World War I, adding significance to the new development.
Situated along the Greenbrier River and Rail Trail, the new Cass campground will offer easy access to outdoor recreation. Visitors will find themselves just a short walk away from the Cass Company Store, a central hub of activity in the park.
According to a press release, Governor Jim Justice expressed his pride in these improvements, stating, “I’m incredibly proud of the hard work going into the campground upgrades at Cass Scenic Railroad State Park and Lost River State Park. Each day, the world continues to discover the world-class recreational opportunities in West Virginia. By improving our campgrounds and preserving the rich history of our parks, we’re inviting more visitors to see for themselves why our state parks are the best in the country.”
Lost River State Park is also set to undergo enhancements with the introduction of 35 modern campsites, each equipped with water and 50-amp electrical service. These upgrades will bring new facilities, including a bathhouse, a check-in station, an RV dump station, and paved roads and utilities.
The project, representing a $4,863,423 investment, commenced in August 2024 and is expected to be completed by June 2025.
Located in the mountains of Hardy County, Lost River State Park is a haven for nature enthusiasts, offering 26 cabins, a swimming pool, and nearly 4,000 acres of forested landscape.
