West Virginia State Parks announced the commencement of construction on a bike trail expansion at Cacapon Resort State Park. This $3.5 million project is set to enhance the park’s existing trail system, adding 35 miles of “professionally designed mountain bike trails.”
“This is an incredible day for Cacapon Resort and West Virginia as we continue to invest in our world-class parks system,” Brett McMillion, director of the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources, said. “We are excited to get started on this ambitious project and look forward to all of the ways it will improve the experience at Cacapon Resort and attract new people to come and visit our beautiful state.”
According to a press release, the goal of this project is to diversify the trail system at Cacapon Resort. The new mountain biking trails will be designed to take advantage of the park’s mountain landscape. These trails are also intended to cater to riders of all ability levels.
Additional aspects of the project include introducing bike amenities that will benefit both park visitors and local community members. These amenities will focus on creating youth-oriented biking experiences and fostering a sense of community. Additionally, a signature trail is planned to attract riders from across the state and region.
The trail expansion will be constructed in two phases. The first phase, led by Greenstone Trailcraft, is already underway. The second phase is scheduled to commence in the spring of 2025, with the entire project expected to be completed by 2026.
This project at Cacapon Resort is part of a broader investment in the West Virginia State Parks system. Over the past seven years, more than $250 million has been allocated to various improvement projects within the state parks.
