Monongahela National Forest Plans Fee Increases for Campgrounds and New Rental Sites

The Monongahela National Forest has announced a proposal to adjust fees across various facilities, introducing charges for new amenities and raising costs at existing sites. This change aims to align the forest’s pricing with comparable locations and support ongoing maintenance and improvement efforts.

According to a recent press release, the proposal includes the introduction of fees at six new recreation sites. These include four group picnic areas where a $75 charge will apply for groups up to 75 people. The locations specified are the Summit Lake Reservoir, Cranberry Mountain Nature Center, Woodbine Picnic Area, and Seneca Rocks Picnic Area.

Additionally, the proposal introduces an overnight stay fee at the Stonecoal Camping Area, priced at $15 per night. Another significant addition is the Red Oak Lookout, where an overnight stay will cost $100 per night. The 80-foot tower is currently being converted into a rental facility, with plans to open to the public in 2025.

Fee increments are also slated for existing campgrounds within the Monongahela National Forest. These adjustments will see campground fees increase by amounts ranging from $5 to $20. The Middle Mountain Cabins in Pocahontas County, for example, will experience a fee hike from $75 to $100 per night.

The swimming site at Lake Sherman Beach will see an increase from $5 to $8 per vehicle, though annual passes will continue to be available at the current price of $30.

Acting Forest Supervisor Tracy Calizon commented on the changes, explaining that the proposed fee increases are consistent with the rates at similar sites within and around the National Forest.

“These proposed fee increases are in line with comparable sites in and around the National Forest with similar amenities and maintenance needs,” Calizon said.

The forest management clarifies that if the proposal receives approval, the new fees will not be implemented until the summer of 2025. This timeline provides forest users ample time to plan their visits accordingly.

Revenue from the increased fees will be dedicated to enhancing the maintenance of the recreation sites within the forest. These funds are essential for ensuring that the amenities can continue to offer quality experiences to visitors.

Despite these changes, forest officials assure that 75% of the amenities at Monongahela National Forest will remain free of charge. This decision underscores the forest’s commitment to providing accessible outdoor recreation options to the public.

This proposal is part of an ongoing effort to sustain the operational standards and the natural beauty of the Monongahela National Forest, ensuring it remains a cherished destination for outdoor enthusiasts in the region.
