Virginia taxpayers can now make a difference by directing their state tax refunds to support outdoor recreation and biodiversity conservation.
Through the Virginia Open Space Recreation and Conservation Fund, taxpayers have the opportunity to allocate all or a portion of their state tax refund to support two important causes.
Half of the donated funds go towards granting outdoor recreation projects, such as increasing access to trails for people with disabilities, while the other half supports the protection of natural habitats for rare plants and animals through the Virginia Natural Area Preserve System.
Outdoor recreation has seen tremendous demand in recent years, but funding shortages have limited the ability to increase access.
By supporting the Trail Access Grant program, localities are able to provide better trail opportunities to all people, regardless of physical abilities.
Meanwhile, the natural area preserves serve as sanctuaries for some of the state’s most precious species and natural communities.
With over 20 preserves open to the public, people can engage in low-impact activities such as hiking, bird-watching, and nature photography.
To direct funds to the Open Space Recreation and Conservation Fund, simply enter code number 68 on Schedule VAC (Virginia Contributions Schedule), Section II (Other Voluntary Contributions), when filing your state individual tax return Form 760.
By supporting this effort, Virginia taxpayers can make a positive impact in their community and preserve the natural spaces that make their state unique.
