Rockingham County Board of Supervisors Approves Special-Use Permit for New Campground in Bergton Area

Rockingham County Board of Supervisors in Virginia approved a special-use permit for a new private campground in the Bergton area, according to a Daily News-Record report. The board’s decision culminated in a 4-1 vote, with District 2 Supervisor Sallie Wolfe-Garrison dissenting.

Rockingham County, nestled in the heart of the Shenandoah Valley, offers a year-round outdoor paradise for adventurers and nature lovers alike. Regardless of the season, the valley’s breathtaking landscapes serve as a backdrop for outdoor activities.

This decision came after two months of deliberation and consultation, addressing concerns and ensuring the safety of the new campground and visitors.

District 1 Supervisor Dewey Ritchie’s consultations with the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) led to a reconsideration of the entrance location, mitigating potential safety risks

Applicant Steven Williamson, as quoted in the Daily News-Record report, shared plans to inaugurate the campground in March, introducing 50 sites, comprising 40 with electric and water hookups and 10 primitive tent sites. The campground will also enforce quiet hours, starting at 10 p.m. to 7 a.m.

The initial operational phase will see two to three employees, with volunteer support, ensuring the smooth running of the site.

For those seeking a more structured outdoor adventure, Rockingham County provides ample opportunities to engage in guided activities. The area boasts a variety of options, including golfing on courses that blend with the natural mountainous terrain, and the exhilaration of a waterpark.

Additionally, the county’s proximity to both the Shenandoah National Park and the George Washington National Forest positions it as a hub for outdoor adventure, offering endless trails for hiking, national parks for exploring, and campsites for those wishing to immerse themselves fully in nature.

Rockingham County is also home to several notable caves and caverns, inviting explorers to delve into the underground wonders of Rockingham County.
