Masks Once Again Required in Shenandoah National Park Buildings

Shenandoah National Park has reinstated mandatory mask-wearing in park buildings. Beginning today, August 22, masks must be worn in all buildings in the park.

The change comes in compliance with the National Park Service policy and CDC guidance as well as in response to the high transmission rates in the park’s area.

“We monitor local community levels and respond when transmission levels are high. The trigger to require masking is when the majority of the counties that the Park resides in move into high transmission status,” Superintendent Pat Kenney explained in a press release.

The mandate urges park visitors over the age of two to wear masks regardless of vaccination status, in all common areas and shared workspaces in buildings owned, leased, or controlled by the NPS. These facilities include (but are not limited to) park visitor centers, administrative officers, lodges, gift shops, and restaurants.

Furthermore, masks must cover the nose and mouth and fit snugly around the nose and chin with no large gaps around the sides of the face.

Authorities also noted that face shields, masks not designed to be protective, and masks with ventilation valves do not meet the requirements.

The NPS, in collaboration with the US Public Health Service, uses the latest science to guide decision-making about COVID-19. The CDC community levels are released weekly and adjustments in requirements will be made accordingly.

The public is encouraged to check the park website before visiting for the latest information about current conditions.

Visitors to the park are asked to follow signs and instructions from park staff and volunteers.
