The Virginia Coalfield Economic Development Authority (VCEDA) has awarded a $10,000 Seed Capital Matching Grant to Mason-Dixon Brothers LLC to establish Ruakh Resort. This glamping destination aims to transform a scenic 87-acre farm in Tazewell County into a unique luxury retreat.
Led by Mike and Mary Blevins, the resort will offer visitors upscale accommodations in geodesic domes, blending modern amenities with the beauty of the outdoors.
According to Cardinal News, Ruakh Resort will feature up to five geodesic domes, each providing 500 square feet of living space, complete with indoor toilets, showers, heating, and air conditioning.
This blend of luxury and nature aims to appeal to travelers seeking an immersive outdoor experience without sacrificing comfort. The first dome has already been completed, marking the initial step in a project that promises to redefine rural tourism in the region.
Beyond the domes, plans for the site include converting a 1,200-square-foot farmhouse into a commercial kitchen and clubhouse. This space will serve as a central hub for guests, providing dining options, event space, and a gathering area. The farmhouse’s versatile design also positions it as a future wedding venue, enhancing the resort’s appeal as a destination for special occasions.
Ruakh Resort’s future development will introduce primitive tent camping options and an amphitheater for community and guest use. The gradual expansion underscores Mason-Dixon Brothers LLC’s vision for creating a multifaceted outdoor hospitality experience.
With a projection of five full-time and two part-time positions over the next five years, the resort aims to contribute to the local economy through job creation and increased tourism.
The project exemplifies VCEDA’s commitment to fostering regional economic growth through creative tourism ventures. Similar efforts have proven successful across the region, including a $10,000 VCEDA grant awarded to Stoney Ridge Farm and Retreat in 2023. This neighboring venture introduced yurt camping on its scenic 200-acre farm, reflecting the region’s burgeoning appeal as a glamping destination.
In 2021, VCEDA awarded to Country Road Cabin Rentals LLC with a grant of $6,500. That initiative, which transformed a camper into a rental unit, highlights how innovative lodging solutions can drive rural tourism and generate economic benefits.
Tazewell County’s rich Appalachian heritage and scenic landscapes make it a prime location for tourism development. By leveraging these natural assets, Ruakh Resort aims to attract visitors seeking authentic, memorable experiences in a setting that blends luxury with nature immersion. The project aligns with broader county efforts to enhance tourism and capitalize on the growing demand for glamping.
Glamping has emerged as a powerful tourism trend, offering guests an upscale alternative to traditional camping. Industry reports indicate rising demand for unique accommodations such as geodesic domes. This trend underscores Ruakh Resort’s potential to capture the attention of travelers seeking distinctive experiences in rural settings.
The economic impact of projects like Ruakh Resort extends beyond job creation, providing a boost to local businesses and encouraging greater tourism spending. By attracting visitors from within and beyond the region, the resort is poised to become a valuable asset to the Tazewell County community and a symbol of rural revitalization through tourism innovation.
