The Dyrt Releases 2026 List of Best Free Campgrounds Across the United States

The Dyrt released its 2026 Best Places to Camp for Free list, highlighting 10 no-cost camping destinations across the United States as travelers look for lower-cost outdoor vacation options ahead of the summer season.

The annual list, presented by Vanlife Trader, recognizes campgrounds and dispersed camping areas that received high ratings from The Dyrt community and do not charge overnight fees.

The rankings include locations managed primarily by the U.S. Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management.

According to The Dyrt’s 2026 Camping Report Presented by Toyota Trucks, 59.8% of campers stayed at least once at a free campsite in 2025.

The company said free camping continues to appeal to travelers seeking to reduce vacation costs, avoid crowds or secure alternatives to increasingly competitive campground reservations.

The top-ranked destination on the 2026 list was Dragoon Mountains in Arizona, followed by Felt Picnic Area in Oklahoma and Mower Basin in West Virginia. Other locations recognized included Meadow Hot Springs in Utah, Fish Lake Valley Hot Springs in Nevada and Mt. Roosevelt in South Dakota.

Additional sites named to the list were Minietta Road in California, Osage State Fishing Lake in Kansas, Cosmic Campground in New Mexico and Morgan Mountain Road/Spy Rock in Arkansas.

According to a press release, Kevin Long, CEO of The Dyrt, said free camping on public lands remains an important option for outdoor travelers.

“Regardless of the reason — difficulty making reservations, keeping away from crowds, staying on a budget — camping for free on public lands is a great way to camp,” Long said.

Long added that the value of free camping challenges assumptions that higher-priced destinations offer better experiences.

“The idiom ‘You get what you pay for’ just does not apply to camping,” Long said. “There are so many incredible camping properties across the country — I’ve stayed at hundreds of them — but for me, this list of the Best Places to Camp for Free is as much of a camping bucket list as any.”

The list includes both dispersed camping locations and established campgrounds. The company also emphasized the importance of following Leave No Trace principles and checking local fire regulations before visiting public lands, noting that some forested areas may face temporary fire restrictions.

Vanlife Trader, which sponsored the list, operates a marketplace focused on buying and selling campervans across North America.
