Texas Park Operators Empower TACO’s Advocacy Efforts with Comments on Key Issues

In a commendable display of advocacy, private campground and RV park operators in Texas have significantly increased their use of electronic communication to be more vocal with their comments.

This surge in digital correspondence is catching the attention of lawmakers and has proven instrumental in drawing focus to key legislation affecting these outdoor recreational establishments.

The Texas Association of Campground Owners (TACO), an influential trade association representing over 420 campgrounds, RV parks, and resorts across the Lone Star State, lauded the operators for their proactive approach.

Brian Schaeffer, TACO’s esteemed executive and CEO, praised the growing vocalization of park operators and their willingness to electronically share their insights with legislators.

The amplified communication channels have enabled TACO to direct lawmakers’ attention toward supporting the legislative needs of these parks.

Ron Hinkle, TACO’s seasoned legislative consultant, expressed gratitude for park operators who actively respond to the association’s emailed calls for action. By conveying their concerns on specific issues, these operators have played a pivotal role in supporting TACO’s efforts to address pertinent matters through new legislation.

TACO’s recently concluded Spring Meeting and Trade Show provided a platform for Schaeffer and Hinkle to acknowledge the increasing participation of park operators in electronic comment sharing.

They highlighted the substantial impact of such engagement on a multitude of bills currently under consideration by the Texas Legislature.

A notable milestone has been the extensive feedback received from more than a hundred parks on pending legislation in recent months, signaling a progressive shift in the industry’s political influence.

This heightened engagement has yielded tangible results, demonstrated by the successful persuasion of Andrew Murr, R-Kerrville, to support HB 2636. The bill seeks to shield campground and RV park operators from liability associated with certain injuries resulting from guests’ own negligence.

With 24 RV parks situated within his district, Rep. Murr recognized the bill’s significance for TACO members and pledged his support.

Beyond legislative advocacy, TACO President Randall Dally and Michael Moore, the association’s assistant executive director, have been proactive in providing crucial testimony on property tax studies.

Their testimonies have shed light on the problematic issues plaguing the current property tax system and the subsequent adverse effects on RV parks. These contributions have played a vital role in fostering a broader understanding of the challenges faced by private campground owners and operators.

Hinkle’s deep-rooted relationships with lawmakers have solidified his standing as a respected figure within the Capitol.

His unwavering dedication to the industry and extensive network have garnered trust and recognition, enabling TACO to make significant strides in shaping legislation. Dally emphasized Hinkle’s invaluable presence, stating that those accompanying him to meetings should be prepared for additional time spent engaging with various individuals.

“He knows everybody in the Capitol. He is well recognized and trusted,” Dally said, adding, “We have a very good legislative consultant with an excellent reputation.”

This further bolstered TACO’s position as a credible advocate for campground and RV park operators.

To support its government affairs program, Texas park operators successfully raised over $16,000 through their annual auction at TACO’s Spring Meeting and Trade Show. These funds will further empower the association’s continuous efforts to advocate for fair legislation and foster a conducive environment for private campground owners and operators.

TACO’s unwavering commitment to its members and the broader camping community continues to strengthen the collective voice of park operators throughout Texas. By leveraging electronic communication platforms and actively participating in legislative processes, these operators are shaping the future of the industry, ensuring their concerns are heard and addressed.

As the association looks ahead, it aims to consolidate its political influence while championing the interests of its diverse membership.
