SpaceX’s Starlink to Offer Internet Services for RV Owners

Elon Musk’s SpaceX announced this week that it is launching a Starlink internet service option for RV owners. They plan to roll out an optional $25 monthly fee for customers planning to relocate to their satellite dishes.

The extra cost will be added to the Starlink base service price of $110 per month and billed in one-month increments. The users can pause and restart their service at any time.

However, the company said its internet service could not operate when the RV is moving and will be restricted to an “as-needed basis at any destination where Starlink provides active coverage,” according to the press release.

Starlink prioritizes network resources for users at their registered service address. When you bring your Starlink to a new location, this prioritization may result in degraded service, particularly at times of peak usage or network congestion,” SpaceX said, according to an email to customers that were obtained by CNBC.

SpaceX CEO Elon Musk said that the company is working on ways to allow users to use the service when in motion. It’s unclear if users must sign up for the service or whether SpaceX will start charging all users who want to move the satellite dishes.

Some RVers have already been using Starlink for WiFi while on the road. Startup company, Cyberlandr has announced it will include a Starlink satellite dish as part of its construction. Apart from Starlink, digital nomads typically utilize mobile hotspots to get WiFi connectivity, while certain RV manufacturers and rental firms already have WiFi routers within their vans.

Last March, SpaceX said that it had an estimated 250,000 users in 25 countries in March. The company also has an estimated 2,000 satellites within Earth’s lower orbit. This service was designed to provide high-speed internet with speeds up to 100 Mbps up to 200 Mbps to users who live in remote regions.
