New Owner Plans to Revitalize Old York County Park into 40-Site Campground

A wave of nostalgia is set to sweep over York County in South Carolina as plans to rejuvenate the once-popular Woodlands Campground gain momentum. Located at 787 Woodland Park Road in Smyrna, this 20-acre property is poised to transform into a 40-site camping haven, complete with RV facilities.

The campground, which traces its roots back to the 1990s, was a cherished spot for many. Structures dating back to the 1970s still stand, bearing testament to its rich history. These include a concrete swimming pool, two bathhouses, an acre pond, and other buildings that once supported 45 bustling campsites.

Marcus Clayton, the current owner, is no stranger to the Woodlands Campground. Having visited it during its heyday, he fondly recalls it as an “old diamond in the rough.” Acquiring the property three years ago, Clayton’s vision is to breathe new life into this beloved site, restoring it to its former glory.

Clayton’s initial efforts to reintroduce camping in late 2020 garnered overwhelming support. Social media buzzed with excitement, indicating a strong community interest in the campground’s revival, he told The Herald.

If everything goes well with the county, Clayton envisions a space where families can unplug, play, and create lasting memories.

The renewed Woodland Park Campground will not just be a nod to the past. Plans include additional RV spaces, a revamped bathhouse, ample parking, and a pristine swimming pool. The property layout also hints at potential areas for future expansion, ensuring that the campground can evolve with the times.

This initiative aligns with a broader trend observed in the Rock Hill region. Camping and outdoor activities have witnessed a resurgence in popularity, with established sites like Ebenezer Park and Anne Springs Close Greenway continuing to attract visitors.

The region boasts a rich tapestry of camping options. From state parks like Andrew Jackson State Park to newer additions like Allison Creek Park on Lake Wylie, there’s something for every outdoor enthusiast. The emphasis on blending nature with modern amenities ensures a comfortable and memorable experience for all.

The potential revitalization of the Woodlands Campground is more than just a business venture; it’s a testament to the enduring appeal of camping. In an age dominated by screens and digital distractions, such spaces offer a much-needed escape, allowing individuals to reconnect with nature and each other.

However, revitalizing an old campground is not without its challenges. From ensuring compliance with zoning regulations to modernizing outdated structures, there’s a lot that goes into making such a project successful. Yet, with community support and a clear vision, these challenges can be overcome.
