RVs and Trailers Remain Most Popular Camping Choice, The Dyrt Report Finds

Recreational vehicles and trailers continue to dominate American camping preferences, according to The Dyrt’s 2026 Camping Report Presented by Toyota Trucks, highlighting a growing demand for RV and trailer experiences across the country.

The annual report, compiled from surveys of The Dyrt Community, U.S. residents, and camping property managers, also notes that many campers face difficulty securing reservations as campgrounds reach full capacity.

The report, produced in partnership with Toyota for the third consecutive year, shows that more than half of respondents favor RVs or trailers, underscoring the vehicles’ continued appeal for comfort and convenience.

In 2025, the U.S. saw 82.4 million campers—the second-highest total on record—alongside 2.6 million first-time campers.

Survey responses reveal that campsite availability is increasingly competitive. Two-thirds of respondents said that at least a tent or vehicle is required to reserve a first-come, first-served site, while short-notice cancellations and early departures have risen.

“As campsites continue to fill up and bookings remain competitive, camping etiquette is more important than ever,” writes Sarah Smith, founder of The Dyrt, in the report’s introduction.

According to a press release, The Dyrt’s CEO Kevin Long also highlighted the role of the community in shaping the report and the broader camping industry.

“They share information and experiences that allow fellow campers to find the best campsites for their own trips,” Long said. “With their survey responses, they help to inform an entire industry.”

The report also features stories from Toyota Adventure Detourists, drivers who use Toyota Tacomas, Tundras, 4Runners, Sequoias, and Land Cruisers to explore campsites nationwide. When asked about their favorite camping memories, most drivers simply replied, “All of them.”

Compiled from thousands of survey responses across all 50 states, The Dyrt’s 2026 Camping Report provides insights into camper behavior, including reservation patterns, cancellations, and preferred camping types.

The findings aim to guide both campers and the outdoor hospitality industry in responding to trends in campsite demand and recreational vehicle use.
