RVing Dominates as the Largest Conventional Activity, Contributing Over $35B in Value and Leading in 22 States

According to a report from the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA), RVing was the largest conventional activity for the nation, contributing a staggering $35.5 billion in current-dollar value added. This economic impact establishes RVing as the leading conventional activity in 22 states across the nation, showcasing its unparalleled significance in the outdoor recreation sector.

The BEA’s recent data release for the year 2022 underscores the pivotal role played by the outdoor recreation industry, and highlights RVing’s impact in the U.S. economy. This robust economic contribution not only solidifies RVing’s prominence but also highlights its critical relevance to the RV industry itself.

The data reveals that RVing has outshone all other conventional outdoor activities, making it the largest contributor to the nation’s economic output. This substantial $35.5 billion in value added by RVing demonstrates the industry’s remarkable strength and growth potential.

Moreover, the states of Indiana, Texas, and California have emerged as the frontrunners in this economic powerhouse, with contributions of $5.9 billion, $3.6 billion, and $3.4 billion, respectively. These figures emphasize the diverse geographical spread of RVing’s impact and its ability to stimulate local economies across the country.

Craig Kirby, president & CEO of the RV Industry Association, underlines the significance of these numbers. He points out that RVing has not only attracted a younger and more diverse demographic but also serves as a versatile platform for a myriad of outdoor recreational activities. From boating and fishing to hiking, biking, climbing, and camping, RVing provides a comprehensive basecamp for outdoor enthusiasts.

“RVs provide a basecamp for every form of recreation included in these new economic numbers.” Kirby highlighted.

This data release highlights the dual benefit of RVing. It not only encourages physical and mental well-being but also serves as a robust economic driver nationwide. As Americans increasingly seek outdoor adventures, RVing aligns perfectly with their desires, offering a flexible and affordable way to enjoy the great outdoors.

The consistency of RVing’s dominance as the largest conventional activity for six consecutive years reinforces its enduring appeal. This longevity is a testament to its ability to evolve with changing consumer preferences and to cater to the diverse needs of outdoor enthusiasts.

The RV industry, which has been witnessing a surge in interest in recent years, can take these findings as a clear indicator of its growth potential. The data underscores that RVing is not just a leisure activity but a significant economic force, creating jobs and boosting local economies wherever it thrives.

The latest BEA data not only underscores the economic power of RVing but also cements its vital role in the outdoor recreation industry, providing a blueprint for the RV industry to leverage its immense potential and continue to flourish.
