The RV Industry Association (RVIA) has established a Grounding Monitor Interrupter (GMI) Task Force to coordinate industrywide communication and education as a new National Electrical Code requirement approaches for 2028 model-year RVs.
The task force brings together representatives from national and state RV park and campground associations, RV park and campground operators, RV manufacturers and suppliers, RV dealers and electrical experts.
Its work is focused on helping industry segments understand GMI technology, prepare for RVs equipped with the devices, understand how the technology is designed to protect consumers and respond when a GMI device shuts off power to an RV.
The task force has released a one-page resource for campgrounds outlining steps to prepare for GMI-equipped RVs.
It also launched a GMI landing page with information for the broader industry. The page is expected to be updated with additional information for dealers and manufacturers and as new information becomes available.
According to a News and Insights report of RVIA, the first step for manufacturers, dealers, service centers and campgrounds is to test electrical systems at locations where a GMI-equipped RV may connect.
That testing is intended to identify whether electrical systems can support GMI-equipped units. GMI devices are designed to test the receptacle into which an RV is plugged to determine whether it is wired correctly and has a proper ground connection.
The testing is critical to preparation because facilities that do not address electrical-system issues may be unable to provide power to GMI-equipped RVs.
The task force’s formation creates a coordinated effort across the RV and campground industries as the GMI requirement moves toward implementation.
Its scope includes both education about the technology and preparation for potential power interruptions involving GMI-equipped units.
The association’s materials are intended to provide guidance to the different industry segments affected by the transition, with the GMI landing page serving as a central resource for information and future updates.
