New Pull-Through Charging Sites Help Oregon RVs Access Electric Power

Oregon is set to address a growing challenge for electric vehicle (EV) owners towing RVs or using them as toads with the introduction of pull-through EV charging stations. This development aims to simplify charging for RVers by eliminating the need to unhitch their vehicles while on the road. Currently, the vast majority of EV charging ports in the United States, which exceeded 160,000 as of mid-2023, are designed for single cars, requiring users to back in or out.

With RV manufacturers exploring the development of electric motorhomes, having accessible and efficient charging options is crucial to their viability. The RV Industry Association (RVIA) has been advocating for pull-through EV chargers as part of the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) Program, a $5 billion initiative funded through the 2022 Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act.

The program aims to build a nationwide network of public EV fast-charging stations over five years, with a focus on major highways and interstates, per RVIA’s News & Insights. According to Jason Rano, Vice President of Government Affairs for the RVIA, ensuring these chargers are RV-friendly is a top priority for the association, as it directly impacts the future of electric RVs and the overall travel experience for RVers.

In Oregon, the advocacy is paying off. Thirteen new EV charging stations are scheduled for installation in 2025, five of which will feature pull-through charging bays designed specifically to accommodate RVs. Electrify America, EV Gateway, and EV Charging Solutions are among the private companies selected to develop the stations. These stations will provide fast-charging options with various amenities, including access to nearby restrooms, food, and shopping, as well as enhanced safety features such as security cameras and overhead lighting.

The new infrastructure will serve as a game-changer for RVers traveling through Oregon. Stations along Interstate 205, including those at Fred Meyer in Happy Valley and a 76 gas station in Gladstone, will offer charging speeds of up to 350kW, with one pull-through bay at the 76 location. On U.S. Highway 97, chargers will be installed at several locations, including Chemult, Chiloquin, and Klamath Falls, with pull-through bays available at these stops. Additional features at these sites include charging ports for older EV models, canopies for weather protection, and outlets for charging e-bikes and mobility devices.

As EV adoption grows, particularly among eco-conscious RVers, the availability of accessible charging infrastructure will be a critical factor in trip planning and customer satisfaction. Oregon’s progress in implementing pull-through charging stations may set a precedent for other states, potentially creating a nationwide network that supports the needs of the outdoor recreation industry and promotes sustainable travel practices.
