Nestled along the shores of Goose Lake, a seasonal lakebed that usually sees some water in spring, the campground offers a remote setting for campers. The Lake County Railroad passes through the park, running mid-day to connect with the main line in Alturas, California.
Due to the park’s out-of-the-way location, visitors are not required to make camping reservations, allowing for a spontaneous and accessible experience for those passing through or planning a remote getaway.
According to its website, migratory waterfowl populations also peak at the park in spring and early summer, drawn by high stream runoff levels. The area also sees increased mule deer activity in late summer and fall, with the animals frequenting the campground’s old homesteader orchard to feed on seasonal fruit in the mornings and evenings.
The park offers 42 electrical sites with water hookups and six tent-only sites, catering to both RV travelers and tent campers. All campsites operate on a first-come, first-served basis. Facilities include flush toilets and hot showers, along with a designated RV dump station, contributing to a convenient yet rustic camping experience.
Beyond the immediate grounds, Goose Lake State Recreation Area serves as a base for exploring nearby attractions, including the Hart Mountain National Wildlife Refuge and the Warner Mountains, which rise to an impressive 8,500 feet just east of the park.
