Chickasaw National Recreation Area Reopens Campgrounds

Chickasaw National Recreation Area has reopened several campgrounds after recovering from a tornado that severely impacted the area on April 27.

According to a press release, the opening includes Central Campground, Cold Springs Campground, and parts of the Buckhorn campground area, particularly Loops C and D, along with its boat launch, fishing dock, and picnic areas. However, Buckhorn Campground Loops A and B will remain closed until further cleanup of brush piles is completed.

Visitors will have access to most of the visitor’s district east of U.S. Route 177, which includes Southead Northeast Perimeter Drive, the Travertine Nature Center, and Little Niagara. Additionally, Guy Sandy and The Point areas are reopening, offering amenities such as courtesy docks, fishing docks, boat launches, picnic areas, and campgrounds.

While the reopening extends to several popular areas, the western portion of the Platt National Park Historic District, Rock Creek Campground, and Buckhorn Campground Loops A and B, along with Veterans Lake, will remain closed as cleanup operations continue.

Park officials urge visitors to adhere to safety guidelines and restrict their activities to the designated open areas. For campground openings, many of the campsites are currently open and require reservations through recreation.gov.

“You can book sites at Central, Cold Springs, Point’s Upper Loop, and Buckhorn Loop C via their website. The lower loop at The Point and Buckhorn Loop D are first-come, first-serve,” Chickasaw National Recreation Area’s Facebook post states.
