The National Park Service (NPS) has announced key dates for free admission to national parks in 2025. The initiative, designed to make the parks more accessible, applies to over 400 sites across the United States.
The fee waivers will be in effect on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day (January 20), the First Day of National Park Week (April 19), Juneteenth National Independence Day (June 19), Great American Outdoors Act Signing Day (August 4), National Public Lands Day (September 27), and Veterans Day (November 11).
These fee-free days aim to encourage individuals and families to experience the natural, cultural, and historical wonders preserved within the parks. “Whether you are a family looking for a weekend getaway, friends seeking a memorable outing, or even solo adventurers desiring to connect with nature, free entrance days make it easier for everyone to explore the parks,” NPS said in a press release.
Visitors planning a trip to a park on one of these days are encouraged to prepare in advance. NPS recommends using its website, NPS.gov/findapark, to locate nearby parks and review options for entrance passes at sites where fees are typically charged. Popular parks may require reservations for camping, lodging, or timed entry, particularly during peak seasons.
Planning ahead can also help visitors avoid common challenges, such as parking availability or overcrowding during popular times. The NPS advises checking seasonal conditions and park-specific details before arrival, as factors like weather, road closures, or daylight availability may influence travel plans.
Activities available at national parks vary widely and include ranger-led programs, scenic hikes, historic tours, and educational experiences. For those unable to visit during fee-free days, parks remain accessible year-round, and visitors can select dates that align with personal schedules. Seasonal variations, such as lower temperatures in early morning hours, can provide additional opportunities for enjoyable exploration.
