A section of the Blue Ridge Parkway in northwest North Carolina is closed to the public as part of an ongoing $123.5 million infrastructure project.
The closure, affecting mileposts 261 (NC 16) to 269.8 (Phillips Gap), is necessary for a paving and rehabilitation initiative. Visitors are advised to follow detour routes, with access to sites such as Doughton Park remaining available via NC 18. This construction effort is part of a broader project under the Great American Outdoors Act and is expected to last through spring 2026.
The closure aims to ensure the safety of visitors and park staff while essential repairs are carried out. Travelers will be directed around the closure using a signed detour route via NC 16 and US 221. While the main motor road is closed to all vehicles, bicycles, and pedestrians, access to the Northwest Trading Post at milepost 258.7 will remain open.
Additionally, Doughton Park’s campground, picnic areas, and The Bluffs Restaurant will be accessible through alternative routes.
“The primary detour route in the area remains unchanged, and access to Doughton Park, including the picnic area, campground, and The Bluffs Restaurant, is available via NC 18,” a press release stated.
Despite the road closures, the Mountains to Sea Trail, which intersects the Parkway, will remain open for hikers. However, park officials urge hikers to exercise caution when “crossing motor roads.”
The project will expand in the fall to include a new full closure between mileposts 261 and 276.5. Specific dates for this phase will be announced as the timeline approaches.
For visitors planning trips along the Parkway, up-to-date maps and information on closures and detours can be found on the official park website. The parkway’s alerts page provides real-time updates on road conditions.
In addition to its outdoor activities and scenic trails, the Blue Ridge Parkway offers a variety of accommodations. According to the park’s website, Otter Creek Campground offers 68 campsites, with 23 sites designated for RVs and 45 for tent camping.
Further along the Parkway, Doughton Park Campground offers more accommodations, featuring 108 campsites, including 24 designated for RVs and 75 for tent campers.
