According to a report, a family proposing a controversial RV park with 300 sites on Great Sacandaga Lake in Mayfield (New York) was given a grant by the state.
The $200,000 funding is part of the 11th round of the Regional Economic Development Council initiative.
Gov. Kathy Hochul announced the $196 million in grants to 488 projects throughout the state on December 14.
A spokesperson from Empire State Development confirmed that the Market New York funding was an award of reimbursement to Kalei Winney, Lane and Jamie Winney’s daughter. The project in Fulton County is listed under Mohawk Valley awards, and part of the project location is within the Adirondack Park.
The grant can be used for construction, supplies, and engineering costs.
The RV park is still in its infancy and is subject to site approval by Mayfield’s planning board. The park will have more than 200 RV sites. The remaining sites are a combination of glamping, tents, and primitive camping.
The Winneys are also planning for boat docks, a boat launch, a picnic area, and space for an amphitheater.
As per the Regional Economic Development Council, the campground “will increase tourism to the Mohawk Valley. This project will provide a safe and affordable getaway for families who want to reconnect with the outdoors while creating lasting memories.”
The owners still require approvals from various state agencies, including the Adirondack Park Agency, state Department of Environmental Conservation, and Hudson River-Black River Regulating District.
Neighbors oppose the plan and have expressed concern about its impacts on the environment and the quality of life.
Mayfield and Fulton County planning officials plan to reschedule a hearing for January 19 at the next planning board meeting.
