New York’s Selkirk Shores State Park Set for $9M Upgrade

New York Governor Kathy Hochul recently announced a $9 million upgrade initiative for Selkirk Shores State Park in Oswego County, according to a press release. The project is set to commence in September.

This development is part of a broader effort to enhance New York’s State Park system, coinciding with its 100th anniversary. The upgrades aim to enhance the park’s infrastructure and recreational facilities, bolstering the local economy through increased visitor numbers and ensuring the park remains a cherished destination for both new and returning visitors.

“With its excellent camping, fishing, swimming, boating, and trails, Selkirk Shores represents the best of outdoor recreation in New York State,” Governor Hochul said.

These enhancements are designed to improve visitor experience and accessibility while also reducing the park’s environmental footprint. In addition, key upgrades include the replacement of the park office, reconfiguration of the entrance and exit for better traffic flow, and the construction of new, more accessible camping restrooms with modern amenities.

“This investment in the park will benefit the local economy by attracting new visitors to experience all the park has to offer, as well as ensuring its position as a treasured summertime tradition for its regular visitors,” Governor Hochul added.

The project will see the installation of crushed stone or pavement at all 130 campsites, improvements to stormwater drainage, the addition of hydrants, and new security features. The park’s 24 cabins will also receive upgrades to enhance accessibility and improve electrical wiring, masonry, and roofing. These changes reflect a commitment to sustainability and improved service for park visitors.

“Selkirk Shores State Park has been cherished by generations of New Yorkers, and we take great pride in stewarding its legacy into the next century of Parks. These renovations represent another significant stride in our multiyear initiative to rejuvenate our parks, operate sustainably, and most crucially, better serve our visitors. We look forward to celebrating our centennial season with our Selkirk Shores campers and welcoming them back to a rejuvenated park in 2026,” Office of Parks, Recreation & Historic Preservation Commissioner Erik Kulleseid said in the same report.

To minimize visitor disruption, the campgrounds and cabins at Selkirk Shores will close post-Labor Day 2024 and will be closed for the 2025 camping season. During this period, visitors are encouraged to explore nearby state parks, ensuring continued access to outdoor recreation.

“I am thrilled to see the commitment from the state to upgrade Selkirk Shores State Park. This investment will secure the park’s future as an outdoor recreation destination for generations of New Yorkers. This project illustrates the dedication to enhancing the quality of life and opportunities for everyone seeking to enjoy some of the best parts of Oswego County. I look forward to the completion of these additions and sharing in the experience of the long-lasting positive impact this will have on our local community,” Assemblymember Will Barclay added.
