In the whirlwind of 2024 and a record-setting busy travel season, one message from campers is coming through loud and clear: “We want OUT!” Campspot, a booking site for private campgrounds, uncovered this sentiment in a recent survey.
The survey revealed that nearly three-quarters (72%) of campers are feeling somewhat or very stressed about economic uncertainty this year, with 94% reporting they feel it’s crucial to get a break from the everyday through camping.
Last year, Campspot predicted 2024 to be the Year of the Calm-Cation. Recent data confirms this trend, showing that more campers are yearning for the calming effects of nature this summer.
Erin Stender, CMO of Campspot, emphasized the shift, noting that their ‘Summer Slowdown’ survey confirms a growing trend of travelers increasingly seeking a break from the hustle.
“Camping has evolved beyond tents and s’mores; it now frequently serves as a powerful remedy for our stressed-out souls,” Stender said.
While adventure and new experiences topped the list of traveler priorities last year, this summer, a “sense of calm and relaxation” (70%) and “a break from the everyday routine” (66%) have taken precedence. Additionally, 90% of respondents expressed concerns about “shrinkflation,” with most admitting it has affected their overall travel plans this year.
The survey also highlighted the mental health benefits of camping, with 98% of campers reporting that camping positively impacts their mental health. According to a press release, 90% of respondents indicated they feel happier when camping compared to other types of trips.
Additionally, 86% of campers admitted they would prefer a week of free camping over a week at a luxury spa.
Stender noted the steady rise of this trend since last year. “Our data shows that this trend has been steadily gaining momentum since last year. And Campspot’s goal is to create more opportunities for everyone to experience the restorative power of camping firsthand.”
