New Report Highlights Growing Interest in Alternative Forms of Camping, RVing

Alternative forms of camping and RVing are surging in popularity, with car camping up 195%, overlanding up 95%, and dispersed camping up 78% since 2019, according to the latest MC Hospitality Highlights report, released by Modern Campground in partnership with Cairn Consulting Group.

Meanwhile, interest in more traditional camping styles has declined, with backpacking down 20%, RVing down 17%, and tent camping down 12% over the same period.

The findings, part of the 12th edition of MC Hospitality Highlights, illustrate a major shift in how outdoor enthusiasts engage with nature. Rising travel costs, advances in off-grid gear, and changing consumer preferences have driven a move toward more flexible, cost-effective, and immersive camping experiences.

“This data underscores an evolving landscape in outdoor hospitality,” said Scott Bahr, President of Cairn Consulting Group. “Campers are prioritizing affordability, mobility, and self-sufficiency, which is reflected in the growing popularity of vehicle-based camping and alternative outdoor experiences.”

What This Means for Campground Owners

As campers embrace alternative ways to experience the outdoors, campground operators must adapt to meet shifting demands. The report provides actionable insights to help industry professionals capitalize on these trends, including:

  • Expanding vehicle-based camping accommodations to cater to the rise in car camping and overlanding.
  • Developing off-grid-friendly sites to attract dispersed campers seeking remote, self-sufficient stays.
  • Offering new experiences such as guided foraging, nature immersion, and minimalist camping to appeal to the growing interest in mindful outdoor recreation.

“With car camping and off-grid camping on the rise, campgrounds that provide the right infrastructure—such as vehicle-accessible sites, dispersed camping areas, and amenities for overlanders—will have a competitive advantage in attracting today’s outdoor travelers,” said Brian Searl, Founder & CEO of Modern Campground.
