This year marks the fifth anniversary of the New Mexico Outdoor Recreation Division (ORD), a pioneer in the development and support of the state’s outdoor recreation industry. Launched in 2019, New Mexico was one of the first eight states to establish such a division. Today, that number has grown to 21 nationwide.
The ORD, part of the New Mexico Economic Development Department, focuses on broadening equitable access to the outdoors, while also aiming to achieve healthy outcomes, environmental stewardship, and economic prosperity. This division has been a critical component in the advancement of New Mexico’s outdoor recreation, which is a vital sector of the state’s economy.
In a statement, Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham praised the division’s accomplishments and its role in making New Mexico a leader in outdoor investments. “Since I signed the law that created the Outdoor Recreation Division five years ago, New Mexico has become a national model for increasing investment in outdoor trails, infrastructure, and resources to create jobs and bring more opportunities to rural communities,” said Gov. Grisham. She emphasized the importance of continuing to build on this foundation to enhance the state’s economy.
The outdoor recreation industry in New Mexico is a significant economic force, employing over 28,000 people and contributing $2.4 billion annually to the state’s GDP. These numbers reflect the substantial impact that the sector has on the overall economic health of the state.
Since its inception, the ORD has successfully launched several key initiatives. It established an equity fund that provided $5.7 million to 250 organizations, enhancing access and participation across various communities. Additionally, the division allocated over $13 million to support 134 projects in 26 counties through a trails initiative, which has significantly expanded and improved the state’s outdoor infrastructure.
As per an Albuquerque Journal report, the division also invested $874,000 in marketing efforts to promote New Mexico as a premier destination for outdoor activities. These strategic marketing initiatives have helped increase visibility and attract more visitors to the state’s parks and recreational areas.
Moreover, the ORD has been instrumental in fostering youth engagement through a high school outdoor internship program, preparing the next generation for careers in this growing field. This program not only educates students but also provides them with practical experience in the industry.
The division also supports innovative programs and pitch events designed to encourage and support startups in the outdoor recreation sector. These efforts aim to stimulate economic growth and job creation within the industry.
ORD Director Karina Armijo expressed gratitude for the community and collaborative efforts that have propelled the division’s success. “Our commitment to sustainability and conservation while expanding access and supporting our outdoor recreation economy has remained steadfast,” said Armijo. She acknowledged the dedication and passion of the staff, partners, stakeholders, and residents of New Mexico who have contributed to these achievements.
