The University of Nevada, Reno (UNR) has launched two groundbreaking programs to address the growing demand for skilled professionals in the thriving outdoor recreation industry. These initiatives, developed in collaboration with the Nevada Division of Outdoor Recreation, represent a strategic response to the state’s economic and educational needs, according to press release.
According to Nevada Division of Outdoor Recreation data, the state’s outdoor recreation industry generated an impressive $6.1 billion and supported 54,000 jobs in 2022, underscoring the sector’s significant economic impact. In light of this, UNR’s new programs aim to prepare students for careers in this expanding field.
The first program is a specialization in Sustainable Outdoor Recreation Management, integrated into the Bachelor of Science in environmental science curriculum within the College of Agriculture, Biotechnology & Natural Resources. This specialization blends existing courses with new interdisciplinary offerings to provide a comprehensive curriculum in sustainable outdoor recreation management.
The second initiative is a minor in Outdoor Adventure and Leadership (ODAL), housed in the kinesiology department within the School of Public Health. This program prepares graduates for diverse careers in the outdoor adventure tourism industry by focusing on outdoor leadership, recreation, and stewardship.
The Sustainable Outdoor Recreation Management specialization emphasizes sustainability and stewardship of natural resources. Students will take existing courses alongside four new offerings: Introduction to Sustainable Outdoor Recreation Management, Environmental Interpretation and Communication, Sustainable Outdoor Recreation Marketing and Profit Centers, and Sustainable Recreation Use of Public Lands. This program aims to equip students with the skills necessary for operations and management positions in both the private outdoor recreation sector and government agencies involved in planning and overseeing outdoor recreation on public lands.
The ODAL minor offers a unique curriculum combining outdoor leadership, recreation, and stewardship. It employs place-based experiential learning, integrating lectures, field experiences, and leadership opportunities in the Sierra Nevada, Great Basin, and Lake Tahoe Region. Graduates will be well-positioned to pursue careers in outdoor education and interpretation, guiding and outfitting, safety and search and rescue, and resource protection and stewardship.
The development of these programs has been supported by the Nevada Shared Stewardship Group, highlighting the collaborative effort between academic institutions and industry stakeholders. This partnership ensures that the curriculum remains relevant and aligned with the needs of the outdoor recreation sector.
These programs address current employment needs while fostering innovation and sustainability in outdoor recreation management. As the industry continues to expand, these initiatives are poised to play a crucial role in shaping the future of Nevada’s outdoor recreation sector and developing a skilled workforce to support its growth.
