One of Michigan’s most popular state park campgrounds, Traverse City State Park in Traverse City, will close for more than a year starting July 7 through the 2026 camping season, according to the Michigan Department of Natural Resources.
According to an article by Detroit Free Press, the closure is part of a large-scale project designed to bring new camping amenities, enhance day-use areas, and improve vehicle and pedestrian access throughout the park. Funding for these renovations comes from an $8.5 million allocation through the American Rescue Plan Act.
The planned upgrades include improvements to the contact station and enhancements to accessibility and sanitation facilities. Additionally, the park’s lodge, which has been a longstanding feature of Traverse City State Park, will close and be torn down as part of the project. These changes aim to provide a better experience for future visitors.
While the campground and lodge will be closed, the park’s day-use area and beach will remain open, allowing visitors continued access to the natural beauty and recreational opportunities of the park during the renovation period. Traverse City State Park consistently ranks among Michigan’s top campgrounds, placing fourth in the 2023 fiscal year for total nights camped, making it one of the most in-demand parks for outdoor enthusiasts in the state.
Investment in outdoor recreation infrastructure is crucial, as it supports a thriving tourism industry and promotes access to nature for all. By upgrading Traverse City State Park, Michigan is not only preserving an important recreational site but also ensuring that the park remains a sustainable and enjoyable destination for future generations.
