Timber Shores RV Resort Proposal Anticipated to Move Forward

Michigan’s Timber Shores camping and RV resort planned to be built in Leelanau Township may move forward after the invalidation of the sewer contracts for two planned housing developments on the 210-acre property, a report said.

Thirteenth Circuit Court Judge Kevin A. Elsenheimer issued an opinion earlier in the month declaring agreements from 1998 and 2007 do not apply to the resort proposed for the property on M-22 south of Northport.

The Timber Shores proposal includes 350 camping sites, a pond, mini cabins, putt-putt golf, and staff housing. It will also have its wastewater treatment system as the township and village facility does not have enough capacity.

Developers are currently waiting for Leelanau Township Zoning Ordinance’s amendment so they can re-apply for a special use permit and site plan review to build a resort on about 80 acres of the land.

Planners made changes to the zoning ordinance, including campsite setbacks, occupancy and density standards, and more. The ordinance was approved by the planning commission this month and is currently being reviewed by county planners before it is presented to the township board for final approval.

A permit to remediate wetlands also requires green light from the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy. A public hearing is scheduled to take place on March 1.
