The Otsego Lake County Park’s (Michigan) campsite improvement plans faced a setback when the county board of commissioners failed to approve a $75,000 grant application due to a tie vote.
As per a report, the grant was aimed at addressing ongoing flooding issues and enhancing accessibility for the handicapped at the campground.
During their meeting on Thursday, April 27, at the county building in Gaylord, commissioners deliberated on finalizing the application for the state grant, which would have been combined with $75,000 in county funding. Jacob Brown, director of parks and recreation for the county, explained that the funds would be used to resolve persistent flooding problems at several campsites and make them more accessible for those with disabilities.
County administrator Matt Barresi emphasized the urgency of addressing the campground’s issues, stating, “I don’t use the campsites, but I know a lot of people that do. We have to decide if we are going to take care of the campsites and the park by maintaining it or if we aren’t going to do that.”
Four commissioners, Jason Clement, Terra Deming, county board chairman Doug Johnson, and Brett McVannel, voted in favor of the grant application. Commissioners Trevor Burroughs, Henry Mason, Jonathan Turnbull, and Kyle Yohe voted against it. Commissioner Dana Wingo was not present at the meeting. None of the commissioners explained their votes.
When asked if the county’s $75,000 would still be used for the campsites, Brown responded that it would be determined and would speak with Barresi about the matter. The tie vote’s impact on the park’s future improvements remains uncertain, and it is unclear whether the county will find alternative funding sources or reconsider the application later.
