Outdoor Costs Set to Increase at Michigan State Parks in August

Michigan campers can expect higher fees as the state’s Department of Natural Resources (DNR) plans its first major price adjustment since its last increase in January 2020. According to Michigan DNR, the new fee structure will take effect on August 1.

The changes include increases between $4 and $10 per night for modern and semi-modern camping sites, with specific rates varying by location and available amenities. Campgrounds experiencing occupancy rates of 85% or higher will implement premium pricing during peak periods.

State park overnight lodging rates will also be adjusted to range from $60 to $120 per night, with deluxe lodging set at $160 per night. The DNR indicates that all additional revenue generated from these adjustments will be directed toward maintaining and improving state park facilities and operations.

Additionally, modern lodges will see a phased rate increase, eventually capping at $236 per night, with locations maintaining 85% or higher occupancy rates subject to an additional $50 nightly premium. Additionally, the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) will implement new fees for intermittent camping and equipment storage.

Rustic campsites in state parks and state forest campgrounds will not experience any fee increases, ensuring that these affordable options remain accessible to campers seeking a more basic outdoor experience.

“Increased revenue will allow the state parks system to enhance visitor experiences across Michigan. This includes improved customer service, cleaner parks and restrooms, natural resource stewardship efforts, and upgraded campground amenities like new fire rings and picnic tables,” DNR indicated on its website.

The fee modifications reflect rising operational costs and aim to maintain quality services across Michigan’s state parks and recreation areas. The adjustments were developed with input from the Michigan State Park Advisory Committee and are based on market analysis to ensure fair competition with privately owned campgrounds.
