Off Map on the Map: Michigan Glampground Adds Glamping Tents with En-Suite Bathrooms

Concealed in South Haven, Michigan, Off Map proves that the outdoors can be enjoyed in luxury—and more people seem to agree, prompting the glampground to add new offerings.

Striving to put itself on the map as glamping continues to grow in popularity, Off Map has added five deluxe glamping tents with en-suite bathrooms as it kicked off the new season. It also added three new safari glamping tents.

Last year, the outdoor accommodation provider opened for its first season, offering 12 safari tents with one on-site shared restroom facility.

Sam Shanley, Off Map’s co-founder, told Modern Campground that the first season’s success led him and his co-founder Mike Doyle to do more construction. Two weeks ago, the glampground opened for its second season. Guests can now book eight more glamping tents, including Off Map’s new offering.

“So those are very similar to our original safari tents, but they have—you know—a private shower and a private restroom built right there into the tent. So for those folks who don’t want to—you know—get up and walk to the bathroom or anything like that, it’s just a little bit easier for them,” Shanley told Modern Campground. 

Twenty glamping tents are now offered at the property, with plenty more fabulous offerings to cherish. At Off Map, campcationers are treated with a complimentary breakfast in its double-dome structure. To jumpstart the day with a serene nature experience, guests can check out the trails to the woods with wild fruit to pick just about everywhere.

Upon sunset,  a community firepit area keeps the spirit of camping burning, through nights filled with music, s’mores, and fun.

Throughout the season, Off Map is a campsite nestled in a pleasant green meadow. When fall comes, the surrounding greenery shifts into orange and red hues—a sight that’s worth a thousand visits, especially for those who reside in urban areas. Visitors from southern Michigan, Detroit, and Chicago seem to agree.

“Most of our guests are city folks, and they’re trying to get off the map a little bit and have a bit of an adventure without necessarily flying all the way out to Montana or something like that. So that was kind of the spirit of what we’re going for,” Shanley shared.

He also said that glamping is a nice introduction to camping for those who have never camped before as they can still experience nature without having to sleep on the ground the first time. Experienced campers also visit Off Map to enjoy a bit of luxury, said Shanley.

“For them, it’s just like: ‘hey, I can still go camping, but this is kind of a nice treat yourself weekend where I don’t have to do quite as much work,’” he said. 

Overall, camping will never go out of style. This form of outdoor recreation has always been around, offering families memories of a lifetime through spending time in the great outdoors. As it continues to be a growing industry, glamping grows along with it.

In the 2022 North American Camping Report of Kampgrounds of America (KOA), it was noted that 36% of campers went on a glamping trip for the first time last year. This year, half of campers are seeking a glamping experience.

With a new season underway and as more want to try glamping, businesses like Off Map adding new structures is a good indicator of how businesses are preparing to meet the demand.

A fusion of the words “glamorous” and “camping,” glamping is camping’s fabulous cousin—still a lover of the outdoors, but just a bit more glammed up with modern luxuries traditionally not found at campgrounds.
