Muskegon State Park Getting $5.25M in Funding for Bathhouse, Road Improvements

Muskegon State Park is receiving $5.25 million for improvements, thanks to funding from federal relief dedicated to improving Michigan’s state parks. The money is from Michigan’s $4.8 billion share of the American Rescue Plan Act.

According to a report, nearly half of the $5.25 million funding will go towards improvements at the bathhouse that could include concessions.

Pat Whalen, Plainwell District supervisor for the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, said other upgrades to the park would be made to the sanitation dump station, Snug Harbor fishing pier, parking lots and roads, and water and electric services.

Other planned upgrades for the park include the possible construction of a new or modernized sanitation dump station pegged at $1.1 million. The dump station is located across from the park’s Lake Michigan Campground in the Winter Sports Complex, which could use the area for other purposes.

Additionally, $250,000 will be used for repairs and accessibility improvements at the Snug Harbor fishing pier, while $300,000 is allocated for the replacement of electrical service at Snug Harbor, new water lines to improve pressure for $200,000, and resurfacing and reconstruction of parking lots and roads as needed for $900,000.

This year is focused on planning for these improvements, and the work is expected to begin next year. However, visitors should note that P.J. Hoffmaster State Park will be closed for a portion of the spring and summer for road resurfacing, but access to the beach will be maintained as much as possible.

These improvements are part of a larger effort to improve Michigan’s state parks and make them more accessible and enjoyable for visitors.

Muskegon State Park boasts an impressive three miles of shoreline, including two miles on Lake Michigan and one mile on Muskegon Lake. It features forested dunes and opportunities for activities such as sunbathing, swimming, picnicking, fishing, and boat launching.

It offers a variety of accommodations, including modern and semi-modern campsites, with some featuring 50 amp service, as well as mini-cabins and a yurt for overnight stays.
