Major Upgrades Underway at Ludington State Park’s Beechwood Campground

Ludington State Park’s Beechwood Campground, the largest campground at a state park on the shore of Lake Michigan, is closed for construction. The construction includes two new restroom/shower facilities and electrical upgrades, with the closure expected to last until at least June 30, according to the Michigan Department of Natural Resources.

With more than 40% of the park’s campsites within its boundaries, Beechwood Campground’s closure could make reservations more challenging for the 2023 season.

However, Park Manager Jim Gallie is optimistic, telling MLive: “We are tentatively hopeful for being open later this month or early June.” He added: “We’ll be really happy to get the construction in Beechwood completed.”

The project includes new restroom and shower buildings and an upgraded electric system for the northern two-thirds of the campground.

The $2.2 million project, funded by the DNR’s Parks and Recreation Division Capital Outlay funding, was initially scheduled for completion by Memorial Day 2022 but faced delays. The park consequently halted construction in June 2022 to reopen the campground temporarily. A new contractor was brought in during the fall of 2022 to restart the work.

Beechwood Campground, a modern facility divided into three loops, offers large, shaded sites surrounded by tall trees. It is situated on the east side of the park, close to Hamlin Lake. Meanwhile, the park’s Pines and Cedar campgrounds remain open and are currently accepting reservations for summer 2023.

Ludington State Park, boasting seven miles of sandy Lake Michigan shoreline and a small beach on the 5,000-acre Hamlin Lake, is a sought-after destination for campers and beachgoers during the summer months.

For private campground owners and operators, the closure of Beechwood Campground could represent an opportunity to attract campers seeking alternative accommodations during the construction period. Ensuring that their campgrounds are well-maintained and providing excellent customer service could help them capitalize on this temporary shift in demand.

On the other hand, private campground owners and operators may also face challenges due to this closure. An increase in visitors to their facilities may strain resources and require additional investments in infrastructure or services to accommodate the influx of campers. It is crucial for these businesses to prepare and adapt to this potential change in market dynamics.

State parks closure updates are posted on the first non-holiday Monday of each month at Michigan.gov/DNRClosures. Visitors are encouraged to stay informed and plan their camping trips in the area accordingly.
