Kona Hills Campground Secures Local Permit Approval

In a significant development for the local tourism industry, Kona Hills Campground, situated in Sands Township (Michigan), has secured a Special Use Permit. The Preserve LLC, the project’s management entity, welcomed this approval as a major leap forward, paving the way for the final submission of their application to the Michigan Environment, Great Lakes, And Energy (EGLE) office.

Nestled in the northeastern corner of Sands Township, the campground boasts a commanding view 200 feet above Lake Superior, perched atop a striking Kona Dolomite rock outcropping.

The Preserve has been nurturing this project since 2020, with meticulous planning devoted to preserving the integrity of the property. The unique design, laid out by Rock Solid Contracting, ensures that the campsites are spread across the terrain, offering a distinct departure from the cluster-style layouts typical of most campgrounds.

The driving force behind the Kona Hills project is a vision to share this remarkable piece of land with local communities and tourists alike. A sustainable approach is key, ensuring the preservation of the area’s unique character.

Known locally as “the rock cut,” the region also bears significant historical relevance, housing some of the largest visible stromatolite fossils globally. This unique feature attracts a diverse audience, from curious tourists to university groups engaged in geological studies.

The 80-acre campground will house 50 tent-only sites, a restriction that underscores the project’s commitment to minimal environmental impact. There will be no sewer or electric hookups on the property, and RVs will not be permitted. However, day use will be open to the public, broadening the site’s appeal and accessibility.

Preserving the land’s historical and cultural significance is a central aim for The Preserve LLC.

“We’re actively talking with local groups and organizations to promote the history of the area as well. If anyone is interested in working on the project, we encourage them to reach out,” said Co-owner Jeremy Johnson of The Preserve.

One particular site of interest is a cliff in Chocolay township, known to the Ojibwa as “O zah gee oh kaw wah bee win,” or “Sauk’s Lookout.” Although it won’t be part of the campground, plans are underway to ensure safe and respectful access to this area. Another feature is a rock outcropping that overlooks a site believed to have been a terraced community garden for several tribes, now the Marquette Prison Branch.

“It’s a bit ironic, this area used to be a site of sustenance for an entire community and now it is a state prison. I think that history deserves more public awareness,” said Johnson.

With its rich history, stunning views, and commitment to sustainability, Kona Hills Campground promises to be an unforgettable destination.

Private campground owners and operators watching this development unfold may find inspiration in the project’s balance of commercial interests and environmental stewardship.

I recently discovered that Kona Hills Campground will offer guided tours to educate visitors about the geological significance of the Kona Dolomite rock formation and the area’s cultural heritage. Additionally, the campground plans to organize outdoor educational programs and workshops for visitors to engage with the natural environment and historical significance of the region. I find this initiative very intriguing and promising.
