After months of discussion and debate, a final decision has been made regarding the future of a Benzie County RV park (Michigan).
According to a report, on Monday, the Crystal Lake Township Planning Commission voted to approve the expansion of the Frankfort Crystal Lake RV Resort.
The applicants filed for a special land use permit to expand the RV park in October, but the resort owner has wanted to expand since 2011.
Frankfort Crystal Lake RV Resort will soon add 70 more sites, bringing the total to 127.
During Monday night’s meeting, the planning commission reviewed 17 conditions to be added to the special land use permit, for example, rules for additional storage and campfires.
After hours of discussion on the possible conditions and voting on them, the board chair then moved to deny the special land use permit because he said the expansion was not compatible with the goals of the township master plan.
However, other commissioners disagreed and voted to approve the permit.
“It’s just an emotional victory as well as just a victory for the community,” Project Civil Engineer Sarah Ross said.
“So you feel like you’re contributing something that’s going to benefit for the long term for all of the businesses and the constituents of Crystal Lake Township and Benzie County and just the northwest Michigan region.”
One of the conditions that the commission approved was that the park won’t be able to expand in the future, meaning the 127 sites are the most that will ever be there.
Ross said construction should begin as soon as possible, and the new sites will be finished by the next fall.
Ross said the resort’s owner hopes to complete the work earlier so that he can begin renting the site next spring.
