Mohawk Trail State Forest Campground Temporarily Closed for Summer

The Mohawk Trail State Forest Campground, a popular camping destination in Massachusetts, will be closed for the summer season.

The Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) has decided to close the campground to accommodate necessary repairs and improvements to the water system and infrastructure.

The work includes installing, connecting, and testing a new well and waterlines, replacing building roofs, and making repairs to Civilian Conservation Corps-era (CCC) cabins.

The repair and improvement work is expected to take approximately 10 weeks, with the goal of reopening the campground in November for the winter camping season

Despite the closure of the campground, the day-use areas of the park will remain open and continue to run as planned. These areas include activities like hiking, swimming, fishing, picnicking, satellite sites, and interpretive services.

For those who had planned to camp at the Mohawk Trail State Forest Campground this summer, there are other camping opportunities available at Massachusetts State Parks. The DCR encourages visitors to explore these alternatives during the closure of the Mohawk Trail State Forest Campground.

The Mohawk Trail State Forest is a significant part of the camping culture in Massachusetts. Its closure for the summer season is a significant event, especially for those who had planned their summer around a camping trip to this location. However, the improvements and repairs being made are necessary for the long-term sustainability of the campground and will ultimately enhance the camping experience for future visitors.

The closure of the Mohawk Trail State Forest Campground is a reminder of the importance of maintaining and improving our state parks. These natural spaces provide invaluable recreational opportunities for residents and visitors alike, and their upkeep is essential for their continued enjoyment.

While the closure may be disappointing for some, it is a temporary measure. With the planned reopening in November, winter campers can look forward to experiencing the improved campground facilities. In the meantime, the day-use areas of the park remain open, offering a variety of outdoor activities.

The closure also provides an opportunity for campers to explore other Massachusetts State Parks.

Campers can also explore nearby private RV parks and campgrounds. With a diverse range of parks across the state, campers are sure to find a new favorite spot to pitch their tent this summer.
