Kampgrounds of America, Inc. (KOA) has released its monthly report revealing a notable increase in travel bookings for the 2024 season. This surge is particularly seen among Gen Z campers, who are keen on securing their spots early for future outdoor adventures. The report underscores a growing trend towards celebrating significant life events through camping and road trips.
“The increase in travel bookings year-over-year isn’t just about the act of traveling. It reflects people’s desire to plan for meaningful celebrations and kindle relationships through shared experiences in the great outdoors. It’s heartening that the outdoors is becoming the place to commemorate milestones and strengthen bonds with family and friends,” Whitney Scott, senior vice president of strategy at Kampgrounds of America, Inc., said.
The data highlights a 10% higher preference for road trips over traditional camping, with 59% of campers favoring road trip travels. This shift towards road-tripping signifies a broader interest in exploration and adventure in the camping experience. In contrast, 49% of respondents still prefer stationary camping, indicating a diverse range of preferences within the camping community.
Travel bookings have seen a significant rise, with 64% of campers already making reservations. Camping trips dominate the bookings at 54%, with hotel stays following at 46%. This proactive approach to booking is led by Gen Z campers and those who took up camping during the COVID-19 pandemic, celebrating occasions like family reunions, birthdays, and major holidays outdoors.
However, a segment of travelers (16%) is considering shortening their booking windows in 2024 due to weather concerns and work commitments. This trend is less seen among RVers, with 25% of campers who combine camping with other travel forms more likely to make last-minute plans. Weather concerns and the flexibility of work schedules are influencing factors, especially among Gen Z campers and tent users.
“Although the intent to shorten booking windows in 2024 is observed within a small group of our campers, it’s crucial to recognize that this trend correlates significantly with the delaying and canceling plans in 2023. It’s imperative that we stay ahead of these changes to ensure that we continue to meet the needs of our campers and adapt to the shifting landscape of outdoor recreation,” Scott added.
