KOA Report Highlights Economic Benefits of Outdoor Hospitality in Local Communities

Kampgrounds of America (KOA) released its latest report as part of its annual Camping and Outdoor Hospitality series, presenting data on the economic impact of outdoor hospitality on local economies. The report, marking the 10th and final installment in the series, illustrates the growing influence of outdoor hospitality, demonstrating its contribution to local businesses, job creation, and revenue generation across North America.

The report highlights that over the past decade, camping has evolved into a significant economic driver, with spending habits of campers directly benefiting local economies. According to KOA, spending by outdoor enthusiasts helps bolster small businesses, increase taxable income, and promote employment opportunities. In its research, KOA underscores the value of understanding these contributions as the outdoor hospitality industry continues to grow.

A central finding of the report is that the outdoor hospitality industry’s growth aligns with shifts in consumer preferences toward nature-based experiences. KOA notes that by adapting to these changing demands, the camping industry has become more resilient and financially sustainable, with an emphasis on creating meaningful connections to nature.

KOA’s research indicates that the outdoor hospitality industry not only supports economic growth but also strengthens its environmental focus, as outdoor destinations appeal to travelers seeking sustainable ways to explore nature. The report also highlights ongoing challenges in the industry, including limitations imposed by weather conditions, gaps in outdoor knowledge, and financial constraints.

“Campgrounds across North America are key partners in their communities, driving visitation and strengthening local economies,” stated KOA President and CEO Toby O’Rourke. O’Rourke emphasized camping as an affordable travel option, a point of particular relevance as economic concerns rise among consumers. This affordability positions camping as an accessible alternative, appealing to budget-conscious travelers while benefiting local communities.

The report provides figures indicating an increase in camper spending, which rose by $28 per person, totaling $156 per day in the past year. This increase is particularly noted among glampers and family campers, who tend to spend more on amenities and experiences.

Economic contributions from campers are also significant, with KOA estimating that approximately $49 billion was spent in local communities by campers during their trips.

Looking forward, the report suggests that interest in camping is likely to remain strong, with eight in 10 campers planning to either increase or maintain their current level of outdoor trips.

The report further indicates a rising number of campers spending extended periods outdoors, with a 98% increase in households camping three or more times annually since 2014.
