Daniel Boone National Forest Waives Recreation Fees for Martin Luther King Jr. Day

Eastern Kentucky’s outdoor recreation offering year-round accommodations have a prime opportunity to capture increased visitor traffic this holiday weekend as the U.S. Forest Service waives recreation fees across Daniel Boone National Forest on Monday, Jan. 19, in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

The federal fee-free designation opens access to boat ramps, scenic areas, shooting ranges and trails spanning multiple counties, creating a natural draw for travelers who may seek comfortable overnight accommodations at nearby private campgrounds and RV parks while enjoying the public lands at no cost.

The fee waiver covers all Forest-operated recreation sites within Daniel Boone National Forest, per the Forest Service announcement from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Day-use locations included in the waiver span the forest’s geographic footprint, with boat ramps at Cave Run Lake and Laurel River Lake among the most prominent attractions.

Additional access points include Bee Rock Boat Ramp in Laurel County, Clear Creek Boat Ramp in Bath County, Billy Branch Picnic Area in Rowan County and the Natural Arch Scenic Area in McCreary County.

Shooting enthusiasts can visit Appletree Shooting Range in McCreary County, Clear Creek Shooting Range in Bath County, Keno Shooting Range in Pulaski County and Whitman Branch Shooting Range in Whitley County without paying standard fees. The Redbird Crest Trail in Clay and Leslie counties is also included in the waiver.

Private campground and RV park operators with year-round accommodations or cabin rentals situated near these fee-free destinations should consider updating their Google Business profiles and online listings to emphasize proximity to these recreation sites.

Properties near Cave Run Lake, Laurel River Lake and Natural Arch Scenic Area are particularly well-positioned to attract visitors seeking a comfortable base camp for their outdoor excursions.

The fee waiver, as noted in the Forest Service announcement, does not extend to recreation sites operated by concessionaires, reserved group-use areas or locations closed for the season or maintenance.

Camping fees will be waived for the evening of Sunday, Jan. 18, at select locations, including backcountry camping in the Red River Gorge spanning Menifee, Powell and Wolfe counties, Bee Rock Campground in Laurel County and S-Tree Campground in Jackson County.

The holiday weekend represents more than a single revenue opportunity for Eastern Kentucky’s outdoor hospitality businesses. Private campgrounds, RV parks and glamping resorts offering year-round accommodations throughout the region surrounding Daniel Boone National Forest have a window to introduce new guests to their properties, demonstrate the value of comfortable accommodations near premier public recreation sites and build relationships that generate repeat visits across future seasons.

Creating bundled packages that combine overnight stays with easy access to nearby attractions also establishes a template that serves operators well beyond this particular fee-free event.
