Iowa DNR Reveals New Campground and Shelter Designs for Red Haw State Park

Red Haw State Park, a gem in south-central Iowa, has long been a haven for nature enthusiasts. Known for its vibrant red buds in spring and diverse recreational activities, the park holds a special place in the hearts of many.

However, a devastating tornado in March 2022 left the park in ruins, uprooting trees and destroying facilities, a report from KCCI Des Moines revealed.

Stepping up to the challenge, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) embarked on a mission to restore and rejuvenate Red Haw. Their efforts culminated in the unveiling of new designs for a campground and shelter, aiming to bring back the park’s former glory.

The new designs promise a blend of the old and the new. While the essence of Red Haw will remain, the additions aim to enhance the visitor experience, ensuring safety and accessibility.

The Iowa DNR’s commitment to the project is evident in their meticulous planning and community engagement. They’ve sought feedback, ensuring the renovations resonate with the park’s regulars.

“We’ve done a lot of planning in the past. They’ve come a long way in getting the park cleaned up. So we’re finally at the point where we can actually start talking about rebuilding and what it’s going to look like for the future,” Chad Kelchen with the Iowa DNR said.

The project, estimated at around $400,000, is a testament to the DNR’s dedication to preserving Iowa’s natural heritage. Their broader vision encompasses not just restoration but also sustainability and conservation.

Red Haw State Park’s significance extends beyond its boundaries. It’s a symbol of resilience, community spirit, and the enduring bond between nature and humanity.

As the park gears up for its transformation, the anticipation is palpable. The community eagerly awaits the return of their cherished gathering spot, hopeful for the memories yet to be made.

The journey of Red Haw State Park, from devastation to renewal, serves as a beacon of hope. It’s a testament to the power of community, collaboration, and unwavering commitment.

As Red Haw prepares to welcome visitors once again, it stands as a reminder of nature’s fury and its beauty, and the indomitable human spirit that strives to rebuild and rejuvenate.
