Indiana Dunes National Park Rangers Offer Guided Miller Woods Hikes in May

Indiana Dunes National Park is inviting the public to join rangers for guided hikes through Miller Woods on Sundays – May 7, 14, 21, and 28, from 1:30 pm to 3:30 pm. The hikes will begin at the Paul H. Douglas Center, as per a news release.

They will follow the Paul H. Douglas Trail, showcasing a variety of habitats such as the globally rare black oak savanna, interdunal ponds, wetlands, and towering sand dunes. These natural features provide breathtaking views of Lake Michigan and Chicago. Participants are advised to wear sturdy shoes and bring water.

The Paul H. Douglas Center for Environmental Education is situated in the western part of the national park, located at 100 North Lake Street, approximately one mile north of U.S. Highway 12 in the Miller neighborhood of Gary.

Indiana Dunes National Park requires an entrance fee of $25 per car for a 1-7 day pass. For those planning multiple visits, a $45 annual pass is also available. Passes can be purchased or entrance fees can be paid at the Indiana Dunes Visitor Center, Paul H. Situated in Northwest Indiana, the park encompasses 15 miles of Lake Michigan shoreline and 15,000 acres of diverse landscapes, including beaches, woods, prairies, and marshes. The park attracts over 3 million visitors annually.

Outdoor recreation is a significant industry in the United States and plays a crucial role in supporting local economies. According to the Outdoor Industry Association, outdoor recreation generates $887 billion in consumer spending each year and supports 7.6 million jobs.

National parks, such as Indiana Dunes National Park, contribute to this thriving industry by providing numerous recreational opportunities that promote health, well-being, and environmental stewardship.

Guided hikes, such as those offered in Miller Woods, enable people to explore and appreciate the natural beauty of the park while connecting with the environment on a deeper level. The expansion and promotion of outdoor recreation activities not only drive tourism and economic growth but also foster an appreciation for the importance of conserving our natural resources.

As more people engage in outdoor recreation, the demand for sustainable practices and responsible tourism will continue to grow, benefiting both the environment and the outdoor recreation industry as a whole.
