Illinois Dark Sky Park Adds New Stargazing Campsites for 2026 Season

The Middle Fork River Forest Preserve in Champaign County has opened a new mile-long Dark Sky Trail, adding to its existing amenities for campers, hikers, and stargazers.

The preserve, the largest in the county, was designated an International Dark Sky Park in 2018, the first and only one in Illinois, in recognition of its exceptionally clear night skies and protected nocturnal environment.

At the time, it was one of only 72 parks worldwide with this designation. Since then, visitation has increased, prompting the county forest preserves staff to enhance stargazing and recreational facilities.

The Dark Sky Trail features lighting designed to minimize light pollution and includes trail nodes specifically for stargazing. Visitors can set up telescopes at a new observatory, and an open-air shelter has been added to support educational or group activities.

According to a news release, a small parking lot has been constructed, and 11 campsites adhering to dark-sky-friendly standards are now available. These upgrades also address accessibility needs, including improved ADA access, and expand options for hiking and outdoor recreation in the preserve.

According to the Champaign County Forest Preserves, the enhancements aim to balance increased visitation with the preservation of the preserve’s natural and nocturnal environment.

Portions of the Middle Fork River Forest Preserve close to vehicles at dusk, but the North Waterfowl Management Area in Penfield and the new Dark Sky Trail in Rankin remain open 24 hours daily for night sky viewing.

For outdoor hospitality operators, the preserve’s developments highlight trends in destination camping and stargazing that cater to both educational and recreational experiences. Integrating amenities that meet accessibility standards while preserving natural features can enhance guest satisfaction and broaden market appeal.

The Dark Sky Trail and its associated facilities serve as a potential model for operators seeking to create niche outdoor experiences that combine camping, hiking, and astronomy.

Visitors are encouraged to explore the new trail and observe the night sky, which has been recognized internationally for its clarity and environmental protection standards.
